The HMH Reading Curriculum at PS 205

PS 205 has joined with the District 20 initiative as being a Phase 1 school to adopt HMH Into Reading and Writing as our ELA curriculum.

ELA is taught based on the Science of Reading with 30-40 minutes per day devoted to teaching phonics using an Orton Gillingham based approach along with an hour of Reading Instruction and 45 minutes of Writing.

Our Reading lessons follow the Workshop Model, which involves a model, guided practice, and independent work. The Into Reading program is used for these lessons. Students are involved in analyzing, annotating, and comprehending texts.

Students also engage in small group instruction to meet their individual needs. Students in the Early Childhood classes use Decodable Texts during these small groups. Upper Grade students focus on comprehension skills.

Our Writing lessons follow the Into Writing Curriculum with children producing pieces of writing across genres including narrative, information, persuasive and poetry.

It is expected that students’ complete homework assigned based on the module, phonics lessons or rereading a decodable text.
